Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant in an area where it can receive full to partial sunlight (at least 6-8 hours per day) in area with enough space to grow. This fruit tree will require at least 12 to 15 feet apart from other trees, plants, or structures. If you are adding additional Flame Grapefruit trees for pollination, consider your space needed.
If planted in a container, trim the outside of the root-ball about 1-2 inches, add fresh potting soil, and reset in your container every few years.
2. Watering: Flame Grapefruit trees will need watering between one to three times per week, or more during hotter, dryer weather. Once the tree matures, it only need watering about once a week. To check if it need watering, place your finger an inch into the soil. Moisture at this level should be good, but if it’s dry, water until it’s damp.
3. Fertilizing: A starter fertilizer is enough to increase root mass and help avoid transplant loss. Citrus tree fertilizer to maintain is also recommended every so often.
4. Pruning: Prune in the spring, after the fruit is harvested. Focus on dead or broken branches to promote healthy growth to fruiting limbs.
5. Pollination: The Flame Grapefruit is self-pollinating. However, planting multiples will help to increase your harvests.
